Concussion Conversations: To Every Parent of Sport-loving Kids

From one parent to another, we can, and must do better..

As we watch our children chase their dreams on sports fields across Australia, it's time we have an honest conversation about concussions and brain health. Our kids' passion for sport is beautiful, but it comes with a responsibility we can no longer ignore.

Recent studies have shown that children involved in organised sports are nearly six times more likely to suffer a severe concussion. This isn't meant to scare us, but to wake us up to the importance of proper care and prevention.

We've made progress. The AFL's 21-day return-to-play protocol for community-level players is a step in the right direction. The NRL's stricter monitoring of contact training shows we're starting to take this seriously. But we need to do more.

As parents, we play a crucial role. We must educate ourselves about concussion symptoms and support our children through proper recovery, even when they're eager to return to play. It's about nurturing their passion while safeguarding their future.

Research shows that repeated concussions can lead to long-term cognitive effects and increased vulnerability to future injuries.

We need to shift our culture. Let's celebrate responsible recovery periods as much as we do goals scored. Let's support our coaches and schools in implementing evidence-based concussion protocols. And most importantly, let's talk to our kids about the importance of brain health.

By taking these steps, we're not just protecting our children today, but investing in their ability to enjoy sports and lead healthy lives for years to come. We have the power to change the narrative around concussions in youth sports.

Our children's brains are still developing, and early experiences have a profound impact on their growth. By prioritising brain health, we're giving them the best chance at a bright future, both on and off the field.

Let's commit to doing better. For every sport-loving kid out there, let's make sure their passion for the game doesn't come at the cost of their long-term well-being. Together, we can create a safer sporting environment that nurtures both their dreams and their brains.

Remember, we're not just raising athletes—we're raising future adults. Let's give them the care and protection they deserve.
